Heading down the Great Ocean Road? While the beaches and coastline provide hours of amusement, head inland just a little and you’ll find yourself in the midst of food and wine producers, gourmet provedores and more.

For those looking for a peaceful and authentic winery experience, Dinny Goonan Family Estate in Bambra, just near Winchelsea, would be difficult to go past. Here you have the opportunity to chat directly with Dinny Goonan: grape grower, winemaker, cellar door staff and a mean maker of coffee.

A 2010 James Halliday Five Star winery (putting them in the top 15 per cent of all Australian wineries), Dinny Goonan focuses his skills on two main varieties, riesling and shiraz with some stunning results.


About Dinny Goonan

Never keen for a 9 to 5 office job, Dinny studied viticulture before searching the surrounding areas of Melbourne for the right piece of land to establish a vineyard.

Being the first in the region to grow grapes, a nursery block of nine varieties was planted to see what did best. The riesling and shiraz stood out and this has been the focus ever since.

A thoughtful and welcoming man, Dinny is involved in all areas from the vineyard to the winery to serving behind cellar door. He is always happy to take you personally through the wines and if it's a quiet day, you may have the opportunity to tour the vineyard and winery with him.

Here you can sit outside with a platter of local produce (available weekends Nov to April), and a bottle of Dinny’s finest while enjoying birdsong from surrounding trees and the view over the vines.


What should I ask to try?

  • Think you don’t like riesling? Think again. Dinny Goonan produce two elegant styles – the Early Harvest Riesling which at only 8 per cent alcohol has a delicate sweetness to it and a crisp dry finish, and the Single Vineyard Riesling with lovely citrus and pear aromas and flavours.
  • Only available at cellar door is the Bambra Sparkling, produced in the methode traditionelle (think Champagne) – a very hands on process Dinny is more than happy to explain. Made from pinot noir and chardonnay it is aged on lees for five years before release.
  • An appreciator of quality coffee, Dinny took himself up to William Angliss TAFE to learn how to make the perfect cup. Such dedication to the bean has paid off as the winery is now known as the top place for a coffee in the region.

Just 125km from Melbourne, the winery is the perfect spot to take a break or stock up before heading down to Lorne, Apollo Bay and the Great Ocean Rd via Winchelsea.

Cellar door is open every weekend from November to June, daily in January. Regional platters are available November to April.
